How to recover a .crdownload file

Recover has a precise meaning here: getting back the data that reached your disk. Bytes that never arrived are not in the file, and no tool can produce them.

Try to resume first

Open chrome://downloads in Chrome or edge://downloads in Edge. If the entry offers Resume, use it: a resumed download gives the complete file, which beats anything built from a partial one.

Copy it somewhere safe

Copy the .crdownload file to another folder before trying anything else. Cancelling or clearing the download in the browser can delete it.

Does renaming work?

Sometimes. Removing .crdownload changes no bytes, so a simple format such as MP3 may play up to the cut. An MP4 with its index at the end will not open, nor will a ZIP, which keeps its directory there.

Recover the part that arrived

  1. Choose the file on the home page of this site.
  2. Wait while the format is identified from the content and the structure is rebuilt.
  3. Download the new file and read the report of what was kept and dropped.

What to expect

A video cut at 60% comes back as that 60%. Sometimes nothing usable remains, so keep the original whatever the result.

Common questions

Can a deleted .crdownload file be recovered?

This tool needs the file itself. Look in the Recycle Bin first; undeleting from a disk takes another kind of program.

Does it work on files from Edge or Brave?

Yes. The format is read from the content, so the browser that left the file does not matter.
